Foams

Foam is a substance that is created by trapping air or gas in a liquid of or solid. The trapped air or gas forms bubbles within. In the case of liquids, a common example of foam is what is produced as a result of soapy water. It is the bubbles that are produced when soap is added to water. In the case of solids, foam is generally in the form of sponges and mattresses.

Foam is created as the layer in between, producing a bounce and creating insulation.

The soft mattresses consist of foam with larger bubbles, whereas those that are firm or hard have smaller bubbles tightly packed together.

A layer of foam is also used for acoustic purposes to absorb sound and keep it from echoing. Almost every sound recording studio has its walls covered with acoustic foam. Apart from that, all sponges are made from layers of foam to absorb liquid and dry out quickly for re-use. Since foam generally has low density and provides a high level of insulation, it is used for packaging cargo, especially delicate products such as glass and crystal.

Foam is regarded as one of the most effective materials for insulation and is also used for insulating the roof and walls of residences, offices and other commercial premises.

As it prevents sound from spreading to the exteriors because of its absorption ability, it is used as a sealant on doors and windows, thus soundproofing the interiors. In colder regions the use of foam helps keeping the interiors warm.

This multipurpose manufactured object is relatively new in human existence, with its production having escalated as late as the twentieth century. However, today it is extensively used for commercial and household purposes. It has become one of the basic essentials that make human life more comfortable.

Natural Latex Foam Mattresses: A Healthy Alternative to Memory Foam

Did you know that natural latex foam mattresses, made from the latex sap of the rubber tree, are a much safer alternative to the popular memory foam mattresses? Memory foam mattresses, like most commercially available mattresses, are made from petroleum based polyurethane foam, an extremely flammable material. Known as "solid gasoline" by firefighters, the polyurethane foam in most commercially available mattresses burns so furiously that strict new fire resistance standards have been written into law, starting with California in 2005 and going nationwide in 2006. These strict new fire resistance standards are being met by tripling the amount of fire retardant chemicals, called PDBEs, that are added to manufacture memory foam mattresses and mattress toppers. Most mattress purchasers are unaware of the fire danger posed by polyurethane mattresses. But the greater danger may be the higher concentrations of PDBEs used to help prevent combustion in memory foam mattresses. PDBEs build up in...
